6. Meredith MonkBeginnings

I hear so many words and human interactions in these wordless vocal pieces. Always makes me smile when I listen to her. I love the humour and the closeness of the pieces and how ancient but still modern it sounds. Her voice reminds me why music with vocals can be so great and personal even without the use of understandable words, and how sound, language and the body are so connected and, at times, can even replace each other completely. I love the song ‘The Tale’, so funny and full of energy. The piano reminds me of my favourite Bartók pieces For Children and Romanian Folk Dances – short, energetic and simplistic.
