10. Depeche ModeA Broken Frame

AM: In junior high I was kind of a poser. I had band names written on my folder that I hadn’t heard yet – but there was no way I wasn’t going to like a band called Butthole Surfers. I knew this music was out there but you couldn’t really find it. I had a soon-to-be best friend who had just moved up from Atlanta and his older brother was a skateboarder and he made me my first tape of anything beyond what was on the radio. It was Black Flag’s Everything Went Black on one side and Depeche Mode’s A Broken Frame on the other. I still to this day say that is kind of the sound of ADULT. I think this record is really overlooked. Other than ‘I See You’, I think the A side is a really strange record: very atonal and experimental.
