As ever with a John Maus show, it’s difficult to discern what he’s actually doing, save occasionally changing the backing track on a CD player and wailing over the top. But for some visual accompaniment, imagine a slim, shirted, sweaty man bounding and rolling around onstage, pulling tortured expressions and regularly punching himself in the face. The Stool Pigeon’s review of his recent show at the Dome in London does a good job of capturing the peculiar appeal of what otherwise essentially amounts to synth-pop karaoke.
